Borage Oil

Borage oil, also known as starflower oil, is a rich source of the long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), a fatty acid that the body converts to a hormone-like substance called prostaglandin E1 (PGE1). PGE1 has anti-inflammatory properties and may also act as a blood thinner and blood vessel dilator. The health benefits of borage oil are attributed to its exceptionally high GLA content. Borage oil has also been used to treat people with eczema, leading to reductions in skin inflammation, dryness, scallness, and itch, without side effects being reported.

Product Information
Uses:
  • As a nutritional supplement, either consumed daily or as required to combat specific ailments (see below)

Health Benefits:
  • Borage Seed Oil may lower Blood Pressure in Hypertension patients (primarily due to the Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) content of Borage Seed Oil). Engler, M. M., et al. The antihypertensive effect of dietary borage oil. FASEB Journal. 6:1681, 1992.
  • Borage Seed Oil may suppress Inflammation (primarily due to the GLA content of Borage Seed Oil inhibiting the activity of certain inflammatory Eicosanoids).
  • Borage Seed Oil may alleviate Rheumatoid Arthritis (due to its Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) content suppressing various inflammatory Eicosanoids). Gaby, A. R., Alternative treatments for rheumatoid arthritis. Alternative Medicine Review. 4(6):392-402, 1999
  • Borage Seed Oil may alleviate Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS): Many PMS patients are unable to convert Linoleic Acid to Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) - Borage Seed Oil, by providing pre-formed GLA, overcomes this deficit.
  • Borage Seed Oil may alleviate Dry Skin (due to the Gamma-Linolenic Acid content of Borage Seed Oil) and may alleviate Eczema. Brosche, T. et al. Effect of borage oil consumption on fatty acid metabolism, transepidermal water loss and skin parapeters in elderly people. Ardh Gerontol Geriatr. 30(2):139-150, 2000
