Medium-chain triglycerides increase energy expenditure and decrease obesity in overweight men

Added: 20 Aug 2013 New findings suggest that consumption of a diet rich in MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) results in greater loss of adipose (fat) tissue compared with LCTs, perhaps due to increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation observed with MCT intake.  Coconut oil is a very rich source of MCTs.

Nutrition Requirements During Pregnancy

Added: 20 Aug 2013 A balanced amount of omega-3 and omega-6 is needed for optimal immune function. This balance is possible only when the two essential fatty acids are consued through diet or supplements in adequate amounts. An imbalance (usually an omega-3 deficiency) has been linked to lower IQ scores in infants, lower scores of visual acuity and an increased risk of depression in adults.

Vegans & Vegetarians have EPA/DHA levels in their bodies as high as those of fish eaters

Added: 20 Aug 2013 A recent large-scale study of diet and omega-3s from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that vegans and vegetarians have EPA/DHA levels in their bodies as high as those of fish-eaters. Researchers suggest that this is because the body converts ALA to EPA and DHA as needed.  Conversion ratio for EPA is between 8-20% (which means 1 tablespoon of flaxseed oil has the same EPA content as up to 6 fish oil capsules)
